Default For the Week of January 11, 2009

We'll start this week with an outstanding value for the Oryon 1:35 scale (about 2 inches tall) hand painted metal soldiers. Military Issue claims to have at least 20 different World War II sets from which to select for just $14.95 each. By way of example, we will feature the German Sturmpionier set.

Amazingly detailed and painted by hand, this set of four 1/35 scale metal figures depicts Sturmpioniers of the 1st SS Panzer Division Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler in their winter camouflage uniforms.

We also have two AFV selections this week. The first is a Corgi 1:50 scale CHURCHILL MKIII TANK from Aiken's for $29.95.

BRITISH ARMY, 145 (DUKE OF WELLINGTON'S) REGIMENT RAC, TUNISIA 1943

Taking a magnifying glass to the incredible variety of armored vehicles, tanks and transporters which were used during the Second World War, Corgi are bringing to the collector a new level of detail and accuracy unseen before on diecast scale models of this era. The first range will concentrate on the World War in Europe and in order to bring this epic arena to life we have chosen to model some of the groundbreaking and iconic vehicles which were to bring such devastating effect to the six years of war that raged across all parts of the continent.

The World War II Collection will become a mark of the highest caliber and this first 2003 range sets an exciting level of excellence. The meticulous attention to detail features working aspects to the models where appropriate, highly specific livery details, realistic look weathering and battle scarring, and in some instances unique and innovative features of the vehicles are also included. Each Limited Edition model has a numbered certificate and all models are presented in superb display packaging.

In the early battles along the Russian Front, the T-34 proved very formidable against the German medium tanks. However, by 1943, the newer German heavy tanks necessitated greater firepower from the Russian arsenal. The T-34 was modified with a heavier armor hull and a more powerful 85mm gun.

About This Tank:
Produced between 1941 and 1958, the T-34 is a Soviet Medium Tank used during World War II. At its introduction, the T-34 was considered to be the worlds best and most effective tank. As the war raged on, the T-34 was continuously refined to improve its effectiveness and decrease cost. The T-34-85 was introduced in early 1944 with its more powerful 85mm main cannon, and the three man turret design. Its effective and cost cutting design would lead directly to the development of the T-54/55 series of tanks which are still operated today.

We feature one of our favorite large sized birds. These Corgi 1:32 scale babies are steadily becoming harder and harder to find and this is the best of their 1:32 Hurricanes in my view. At $59.95, it is also offered at a very good price by 3000Toys.

Hawker Sea Hurricane 1B - No. 880 SQ. Fleet Air Arm, HMS Indomitable, Indian Ocean. Restoration started in earnest in February 1986, and led to the first flight of the world's only Sea Hurricane 1B in the hands of pilot Andy Sephton on September 16, 1995.
