Default For the Week of May 8, 2011

We make our selections this week in continued celebration of the world being rid of a terrorist murderer, who is currently roasting marshmallows with Adolph, Joe and Mao.

Our armor selections this week are both from the Dragon 1:72 scale line. The first of these is the 60124 Ferdinand, 1.Kompanie, sPzJgAbt.653, Orel Eastern Front, July 1943 w/Zimmerit from On Mark for just $9.00.

Features:
- new-tooled upper super structure and lower hull
- true-scale model
- Historically accurate camouflage
- Detailed and weathered track links
- Dragons patented Zimmerit coating
- display case

The Ferdinand was a heavy assault tank designed by Porsche and built by Nibelungenwerke, especially for the needs of the Eastern Front. Ferdinand's design was based on Porsche's Tiger - VK 4501(P) prototype which proved to be prone to mechanical failures and was rejected in favour of Henschel's prototype.

About This Release,
It weighed more than 70 tons...It was the heaviest armored vehicle to enter combat in WWII…It boasted a powerful 128mm PaK44 L/55 gun…It was none other than the formidable Jagdtiger! Dragon now brings to collectors, a spectacular 1/72 scale model of this mighty German tank destroyer. The model is distinguished by the fact that it features the rare Porsche suspension system. Of the 88 Jagdtigers built, just 11 of the earliest vehicles were based on the Porsche suspension design, which had eight road wheels instead of the nine wheels on the later Henschel-designed setup.

This model represents a vehicle fighting against the advancing Allies in Alsace on the Western Front in 1945. It is from sPzJgAbt 653, one of only two heavy antitank battalions equipped with the Jagdtiger (the other was sPzJgAbt 512). Interestingly, only about 20% of Jagdtigers were lost as a result of combat damage, for the majority were abandoned and sabotaged by their crews usually when they broke down! Another interesting aspect of this model from Dragon Armor is the zimmerit coating, which adorns the hull and almost to the top of the superstructure sides. This is produced by Dragon’s high-tech patented zimmerit process. The top of the boxy fighting compartment is also draped in a tarpaulin, which provided some form of additional weather protection for the crew. The accurate scale model is coated in a precise three-coat camouflage scheme. It’s also authentically weathered, which enhances the scale look of the zimmerit. All in all, this is a fine rendition of the mightiest armored vehicle to fire in anger during the world’s largest ever conflict.

Last to lift off this week is a great pair of 1:48 scale Eagles International P-51B's from the Flying Mule for only $39.99 without a coupon code and an amazing $35.99 with it. You can pick up the Eagles International 10007 North American P-51B Mustang Diecast Model RAF No.315 (Polish) Sqn, Eugeniusz Horbaczewski, RAF Brenzett, England, June 1944.

Designed to meet an RAF requirement for fighter-bomber and reconnaissance aircraft, the P-51 Mustang was first flown on October 26th, 1940. This versatile aircraft was capable of escorting bombers on long-range missions, engaging in dogfights, and dropping down to destroy German targets on the ground. At least eight versions of the P-51 were produced, but it was the definitive P-51D that gave the Mustang its classic warbird appearance. Britain and the US both tested the airframe with the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, which gave the aircraft tremendous performance gains. The Truman Senate War Investigating Committee called the Mustang "the most aerodynamically perfect pursuit plane in existence."

The Eagles International range presents highly-detailed, ready-made diecast models of military aircraft.

Eagles International diecast airplanes feature:
  • Diecast metal construction with some plastic components.
  • Realistic panel lines, antennas, access panels and surface details.
  • Pad printed markings and placards that won't fade or peel like decals.
  • Optional extended/retracted metal landing gear with rotating wheels and rubber tires.
  • Detailed removable pilot figures.
  • Detailed cockpit interiors with open/closed canopy options.
  • Authentic detachable ordnance loads complete with placards.
  • Accurately detailed underside with concealed screwheads.
  • Presentation stand to display the aircraft "in flight".
  • Length: 8" & 9.25" Width

The Eagles International 10004 North American P-51B Mustang Diecast Model USAAF 26th FS, 51st FG, Tex Hill, China, 1945.

David Lee 'Tex' Hill was a pre-war Navy Pilot, recruited in 1941 by General Claire Chennault to join the AVG, better known as the 'Flying Tigers'. The 51st Pursuit Group later became the 51st Fighter Group seeing action in the India-Burma Campaign. Assigned to the 14th Air Force in October 1943 they moved to China where they received P51s in 1945.
The plane that made the Mustang famous! The P-51B (Inglewood, CA Manf.) and the P-51C (Dallas, TX Manf.) was a major progression to the original Allison powered P-51A Mustang. The British designation for the B/C Mustang was Mustang III. While the P-51A was a fine low altitude fighter, it suffered from the lack of a two speed, two stage supercharger for its Allison engine. Most aerial combat in Europe took place above 15,000 feet, right where the P-51A was running out of steam. The Allison was early into its development and wouldn't display its full power until the P-82 twin Mustang, too late for the war. The P-51B/C would mate the Spitfire's well developed Merlin engine (racing since 1935), licensed for manufacture in the US by Packard, to its sleek airframe. A four bladed propeller and the new supercharger turned the P-51 into one of, if not the best fighters of WWII.The P-51B/C was actually faster than the P-51D due to combat weight increases. 3,378 B's and C's were built by North American Aviation (Later Rockwell International and today Boeing).
