Britain The M4 Sherman tank was one of the most ubiquitous sights of World War II, and not only reigned as America’s main battle tank, but also that of British, Canadian, and Free French armored formations. Between 1942 and 1946, eleven plants turned out a staggering total of 49,324 Shermans, making it the most widely produced tank series of the war.
The M4A1 started coming off the assembly lines in February 1942. It featured a fully traversing turret with a short 75-millimeter main gun, a .30-caliber co-axial machine gun, and a .50-caliber machine gun on top for the tank commander. The hull also had a ball-mounted .30-caliber machine gun projecting from the bow.</B>
