Default For the Week of June 7, 2009

As we mark the 65th anniversary of the Normandy landings, we dedicate these week's selections to all of those who were there in 1944.

Our first selection this week is another Oryon 1:35 scale find at Military Issue for just $14.95. From the Eastern Front near Kirovograd, we have a four piece set of soldiers representing both sides of the conflict there.

From December, 1943, to January, 1944, German forces battled Russian offensive actions on the Eastern Front near Kirovograd. These carefully crafted, hand painted 1/35 scale metal figures show Ramcke's German Fallschirmjaegers ready to attack the Russian Army's 67th Armored Division in that famous battle. 2" tall.

Staying put on the Eastern Front, your next selection is a Dragon 1:35 scale DIECAST Sd.Kfz.184 ELEFANT Russia from Toy train Heaven for just $32.89.

1/35 Sd.Kfz. 184 Elefant sPzJgAbt 653, Russia/Poland 1944

When first introduced onto the Eastern Front at the Battle of Kursk in 1943, the Elefant, like the animal it was named after, became bit of an endangered species! It was powerful but ponderous, able to kill tanks from long ranges, but unable to defend against infantry at close ranges. Some of its defensive shortcomings were later rectified by the addition of a bow machine gun, while its 8.8cm PaK43/2 L/71 gun remained as lethal as ever. Dragon Armor has released a new 1/35 scale Sd.Kfz. 184 Elefant, which is finished in the colors and markings of a vehicle serving with PzJgAbt 653, one of the original units that fielded this new type of tank destroyer at Kursk. The three-color camouflage scheme is highly attractive, with mottled green and brown patches over a yellow base.

Main Features:
- True to 1/35 scale
- Fully assembled
- Accurate tracks with appropriate level of sag
- Barrel can elevate and lower.
- Includes a display base

As with the previous limited edition Elefant, this is a superb collectors’ piece. The unblemished paint scheme is realistically weathered to represent an Elefant fighting on the Eastern Front in 1944. The lifelike tracks have just the right degree of sag, while the hull machine gun is movable. The long barrel (or should we say trunk?) of the Elefant also elevates and depresses. This fully assembled model bears a host of remarkable features, and with such a fine specimen as this, the survival of the Elefant species is assured!

No--you can't leave the Eastern Front yet, as our next selection is a 1:50 scale Corgi Battle of Kursk Diorama from July 1943. This item is presented by Historic Aviation for $39.95.

Recreating a scene from the Battle of Kursk - the largest armored engagement of all time where Russian defenses frustrated an ambitious German attack - this limited edition 1/50 scale diorama includes one T-34 and one Tiger tank meeting in battle and a display base. Each die cast model features authentic camouflage, a rotating turret and moving tracks and measures 5" long.

It's time to present our aircraft collectors with their picks this week. Our first selection is no longer on the Eastern Front--but many will think it to be close. From Showcase Toys, we feature a Corgi 1:72 scale P-40E Warhawk Model, USAAF 11th FS "Aleutian Tigers" - Corgi AA35205 for $23.95.

Corgi Limited Edition Diecast Model

Curtiss P-40 E Warhawk - 11th FS "Aleutian Tigers", USAAF, Aleutian Islands, 1943

1:72 scale. Wingspan: 6.25" (15.9 cm). Includes display stand

The P-40's of the 11th FS, 343rd FG were painted in a variation on the theme made famous by the American Volunteer Group (A.V.G., also known as Flying Tigers), and were known as the Aleutian Tigers. This version with a white spinner was one of the latest P-40 's to still be flying when attached to the 11th Fighter Squadron in 1943

The P-40's legacy will always be as the aircraft flown by Claire Chennault's American Volunteer Group (A.V.G or also known as the Flying Tigers). 100 P-40's (considered obsolete) were given to the Chinese in 1941. In approximately 6 months of combat the AVG officially destroyed 297 planes with another 153 probables. All of this was accomplished with the loss of only 12 P-40's.

The Corgi Aviation Archive features a wide selection of high quality, ready-made, diecast model airplanes. Each model is crafted with meticulous attention to detail, using specifications of the original aircraft. Corgi models are built with diecast metal and some plastic components.

The models in the Corgi Aviation Archive series feature: realistic panel lines, a detailed cockpit with pilot figure, historically accurate markings and optional extended or retracted landing gear.
