About the P-47C:
The first flight of the heavy P-47 took place on 6 May 1941. A series of modifications ultimately led to the P-47C-5, which was the principal sub-variant of the P47-C family. This variant was among the first Thunderbolts to be sent overseas for combat, and the 4th FG (Fighter Group) in England received this fighter.

This famous FG was built around "Eagle Squadron", a group of experienced American pilots who were serving with the RAF, many of whom were none too pleased to be trading in their nifty Spitfires!

About Ralph Hofer:
* September 22, 1943, joins 4th Fighter Group
* October 8, 1943, gets air to air kill on first mission
* June 22, 1944, "A" Flight CO
* July 2, 1944, Killed in action in P-51B QP-X, 43-6746 while climbing to engage 20+ Me-109's near Budapest, Hungary. The wreckage of his Mustang and his body were later found at Mostar, Yugoslavia.
