Shifty's life has been recognized and honored a bit more than most might think. One small example is here:

I would much rather be remembered the way that Shifty is than Michael Jackson is.

I also hope that we remember all the other vets who sacrificed so much in World War II. In the end, it should not matter whether or not a part of their service was captured in print or on the screen. I'm sure that Shifty would agree.
