Like all aircraft the P-39 had its strengths and weaknesses. It was under powered at mid to high alititudes because of the single stage blower. It was easy to fly and land with its tricycle landing gear. Its cold weather starting system favored extreme cold weather. It was an exellent ground attack aircraft with great forward visability and was heavily armed.

Both the P-39 and the P-63 were death traps if they went into a flat spin.
The Russians used the hell out of them in ground attack missions.

Of special note is the P-38 in the picture, It looks like an early prototype as its in metal finish.

Yea Pat--that's probably right about the Lightning, as it has no guns. It was also the last plane pictured to reach the front.

The twin engine bomber on the left "missing" its tail is said to be a B-23.
