A few minutes with Steve in a game of 2 vs 2 comps and you'll be fine.

2 things:
1. How do I get the camera not to bounce all over -- when I volley sometimes it will action-jump to my target. I'd prefer it to be more stable and oriented behind my unit. I tried changing the camera options but couldn't quite get a good camera setting. 2. I attached my general to 4 infantry units in a group. When I gave the order for them to open fire, my general goes galloping into enemy lines! How do I prevent that if he's grouped with infantry?

1. I don't know.
2. Refrain from grouping your General with anything but calvary, and then only sometimes. Units are still under his command whether grouped or not. |

Two more questions:
1. Do Generals have a command radius? 2. When I'm setting up a battle, is there any option to pay more to increase the experience of your troops. RTW apparently had this option but I don't see it in NTW. Maybe I'm just too bothered by the fact that my green jacket riflemen have "poor" morale. I beat a bunch of CPU frog regs and fusiliers last night with some KGL companies, a company of Highlanders and a company of Rifles plus a trust 6 pounder. The Frogs pressed home several attacks but I rolled their right flank, then brought home a charge that broke their lines with my Highlanders!

1. Yes, but not a visible one. Some of your troops will show "Confident at the General's presence," or something like that. Generals are best used for rallying broken units and mop up or last defense measures.
2. No, in NTW, troop experience is the same for every unit of each class. But say an "Old Guard" unit will have more than a "Young Guard," and so forth. So it's how much you pay during the troop selection phase. It's VERY hard to break an "Old Guard" unit. Russian troops are very tough up close. I try to just work them close enough to units I've hit with the Russian 12 pounders (very good) and charge. The Brits have great rifles. With them, you want to stand off and cut 'em down with volleys. Brit cannons are weak. The French do everything well. Light unit's rifle range is very long, but they're weak weak weak in close fighting. When possible, get your cannons to fire cannister rounds, devastating and awesome to watch an enemy unit's ranks get mowed down, enemy must be within a hundred meters or so or no damage. You can rip your own infantry to shreds, so be careful. In the battles, height and rifle range are the most important factors. Good Russian troops charging downhill can be devastating. Don't use your cannon as counter battery units. It takes almost all your ammo to destroy an enemy cannon. Focus on high value units. At the mod site, or somewhere, I read they did this on purpose to prevent drawn-out artillery duels. Seems to me just having calvary in the enemy's rear weakens them. You don't even have to charge against the AI. The games Steve and I played were really fun. Much slower that RTW. Much more strategy. We had some long, intense, and bloody fights. Momentum ebbed and flowed till (usually) he'd prevail (but not always). Last edited by KG_Soldier; 03-01-2007 at 11:18 AM.. |

We need to get a game going. I need to pound some frogs in multiplayer!

Remember, these are the French before Verdun, the brave French, the tough French, the ones that no longer exist.

Lead by a Corsican . . . .
Do columns work for the French like they did in real life? Can I break a Russian line by ramming my French column through it? I didn't try column formation last night, although I did form a square during set up just to see what it looked like.

Columns can work but you have to turn off the fire at will mode or the rear ranks will devastate the fronts. I havent used squares yet.

Well I finally figured out why my camera was all wonky. I was hitting delete twice to zoom onto a unit -- apparently, that is a super zoom which gives you some sort of jerky action cam -- when my guys would volley, the camera would jump to their targets.
By left clicking twice on a unit, I cured my problems completely and had much better control of the battlefield. A lot of British soldiers had to kill CPU Frogs to make this possible, so I'd like to thank them for their hard work . . . . I'm looking forward to our next confrontation. We need Andy to break out his copy for a 2 on 2 game.
