While we are waiting for possible Memorial Day sales, we have found some selections that might provide you with you die cast fix until next week, when we will be celebrating the service and sacrifices of those who have served and are currently protecting us.

Our first pick is the mighty UK Firefly. This model of the tank is a 21st Century 1:32 scale from Great Models for $18.35.

The German counteroffensive through the Ardennes in the winter of 1944, the Battle of the Bulge, will long be recalled in American military annals as having inflicted on the US 12th Army Group the first and only serious reverse it suffered in its sweep from Normandy to the Rhine.

It's Memorial Day weekend. Our thoughts and prayers turn to those who sacrificed so much for the rest of us, paying the cost to achieve and maintain our freedom and nation. In that spirit we feature our military die cast picks for this week.

Our first selection is a U.S. World War II tank. From Corgi's 1:50 scale History Channel line and brought to you by Aikens for $24.95, it is a U.S. ARMY "761ST TANK BATTALION" M4A3 SHERMAN TANK.

Here it is:

http://www.aikensairplanes.com/corgi/hc51021.htm

Our next selection is from the other side in World War II. It is also a 1:50 Corgi, but this one is from the Skirmish line, brought to you by Diecast Direct for $29.37. It is SdKfz7/1 & Anti-Aircraft Gun & 3 German Infantry Figures - German Army, Holland 1944 (CC60011).

By November 1944 the German 15th Army withdrew deeper into Holland. The German 7th army began a series of attacks against the US 9th Army. The Germans had been preparing a massive counterattack in the West since the Allied breakout from Normandy. The plan called Wacht am Rhein (“Watch on the Rhine”) was to attack through the Ardennes and swing North. The attack started on December 16 in what became known as the Battle of the Bulge. After initial successes in bad weather, which gave them cover from the Allied air forces, the Germans were eventually pushed back to their starting points by January 15, 1945.

Your path to that history is here:

http://www.diecastdirect.com/asp_mod...uctCode=C60011

It's time to fly high with our aircraft selections. Our first is in my view the best of the 1:32 scale Corgi Hurricanes. On sale at 3000 Toys for $59.99, is the Hawker Sea Hurricane 1B - No. 880 SQ. Fleet Air Arm, HMS Indomitable, Indian Ocean (AA35504).

Your offshore vector is:

http://www.3000toys.com/catalog/item...d=CORGIAA35504

Our final selection for this special week is a 1:48 Carousel 1 bird on sale at Sport Craft Cars for just $41.95. It is a German Luftwaffe Messerschmitt Bf 109 V-14 Zürich International Flying Meet Switzerland July 1937--Generalmajor Franz Ernst Udet (WWI / 62 Victories).

Rev your engines and then taxi to the bottom of this web page:

About This Tank
Officially named the Panzerkampfwagen VI Ausf. B, the King Tiger was a formidable German tank weighing 69.8 tons. Entering production in mid-1944, it was armed with an 8.8cm KwK 43 L/71 gun and its frontal armor was up to 180mm thick. With such assets, this tank could easily prey on its less well-armed Allied opponents. However, its bulk and underpowered engine meant it wasn’t as effective in offense. Dragon Armor has launched a fantastic new fully built-up 1/35 scale model of a Tiger II. This is the very first Henschel production version of the King Tiger to feature in the larger-scale Dragon Armor range. The actual vehicle it is based on was a tank of sPzAbt 506 that fought in the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes in December 1944. Interestingly, this was the only Heer Tiger battalion to participate in the winter offensive.

A couple of days ago we honored the 64th Anniversary of D-Day. Continuing with that theme, our armor selections are from the Corgi 1:50 scale OMAHA BEACH - D-DAY, JUNE 6 60th ANNIVERSARY SERIES. Both of our armor picks are On Mark red tag sale pieces.

The first is a US51011 M4A3 Sherman Tank with Exhaust Stacks US Army 741st Tank Battalion, priced at 24.00.

It can be found in the second row of AFV's on this page:

http://onmarkint.netfirms.com/onmark...ilitaryveh.php

The second selection can be found at that same link, but three rows from the bottom. Offered for $15.00, it is a US60401 M3A1 Half Track USA,41st Armored Infantry, 2nd Armored Division.

Our first aircraft selection is also a Corgi, but in the 1:72 scale. From Diecast Direct for just $23.97, it is the AA36606 Lockheed F-4-1-LO Lightning - Photo Reconnaissance, A55-3, RAAF 1st. PRU. Because Diecast Direct won't let me show you a picture of it, we turn to Tim's fantastic Corgi site to get one.

I hope that all the dad's out there had a great Father's Day. To make the day (OK night) a bit brighter for all dads and their buds, we have some good values this week.

Our first armor selection is from the Forces of Valor 1:32 collection. Brought to you for $33.57 by Diecast Direct, it is a short barreled Panzer IV F in winter camo.

Check it out in more detail here:

http://www.diecastdirect.com/asp_mod...ctCode=FV80317

Our next three selections are from the Franklin Mint sale at the Flying Mule. The first is probably the best value, if also the most expensive. We start with a 1:24 scale M4A3 76mm Sherman for $97.50.

Franklin Mint Armour Collection B11B649
M4 Sherman Tank Diecast Model
US Army

1:24 Scale M4 Sherman Tank
Length Width
9.5" 4.5"

This is a precision-engineered scale model from The Franklin Mint, carefully crafted, hand-painted and hand-finished, featuring a level of detail far and above that of the Franklin Mint's regular Armour Collection series. This model features many operating parts including a rotating removable turret, elevating cannon, moving tracks on rotating wheels with working suspension, opening hatches and more.
What the ship is to the Navy and what the airplane is to the Air Force-that's what the tank is to the Army. And the U.S. Army's greatest tank commander was George S. Patton Jr. Born in California on November 11, 1885, Patton attended Virginia Military Academy, graduated from West Point, and participated in the 1912 Olympic Games as a pentathlete.
During World War I, Patton served as aide to Gen. John J. Pershing and organized and trained the first tank brigade. With the outbreak of WWII, Patton returned to the battlefield and distinguished himself in a variety of campaigns-the invasion of North Africa where he faced Gen. Rommel's tank forces, and the invasion of Sicily, where he led the Seventh Army. Later, under his spirited command, the Third Army pushed through France and Germany, and into Czechoslovakia. Patton's flamboyant style and impetuous manner made him a hero to his troops, but led to a series of official reprimands and reassignments. In December of 1945, less than a year after defeating the Nazis, Patton was injured in a car accident and died in a Heidelberg hospital. A genius in tank warfare, Patton thwarted the German counter offensive at the Battle of the Bulge, leading the way in his M4-A3 Sherman tank. The Sherman tank was the standard tank produced in the U.S. from 1942 through 1944. More than 50,000 were delivered during the height of production, and the M4-A3 was the the most important of all WW II combat tanks. This formidable vehicle was armed with a 76mm gun which had superior penetrating power and could pierce 4 inches of armor at 1,000 yards. General Patton and the redoubtable Sherman tank share a moment in military history that will not be forgotten.
The Franklin Mint "Armour Collection" range presents detailed, ready-made diecast models of military vehicles. Armour Collection diecast vehicles from The Franklin Mint require no glueing or painting. Each model is an instant display piece or diorama centerpiece straight from the box.

As we move into summer, we have some attractive selections to submit for your consideration. Our first armor pick is from the 3000 Toys sale. It is a Corgi 1:50 scale Korean War era Sherman 76mm with advanced suspension. They have only a few left for sale at $24.98.

Feed the tiger and your collection here:

http://www.3000toys.com/catalog/item...d=CORGIUS51008

We have featured our next pick before, but in light of the $48.97 price at Diecast Direct and it's increasing rarity from vendors, we again give your the Dragon 1:35 scale 1:35 GERMAN TIGER I TANK "#122" (INITIAL PRODUCTION) S.PZ.ABT.502

Another oldie but goodie selection is this Corgi 1:32 scale Bf-109 G-2 in winter dress for just $44.95 by 3000 Toys. It is the Yellow 12, Oberleutnant Heinrich Ehrle, Staffelkapitan 6./JG5, Petsamo, Finland 1943
This particular aircraft is remarkable for the livery. To provide camouflage more suited to the terrain over which it was operating, Ehrler's early Gustav had been given a coat of washable paint (including the fuselage cross), to which large irregular patches of dark green had been added.

Scramble to it here:

http://www.3000toys.com/catalog/item...d=CORGIAA34906

Our final bird is the P-38J Lightning of Capt Robin Olds from Joe Pilot for $27.50.

This P-38 was one of the few in the 479th FG that retained its olive drab scheme right up until the unit transitioned to the P-51D in September, 1944. NEW CASTING!

The red rudder was adopted in place of the 434th FS is geometric symbol around the time of D-Day. Robin Olds flew at least two P-38Js during his initial months of combat with the 479th FG, this aircraft almost certainly being the last of them.

Both of our armor selections this week are from the Flying Mule's inventory reduction sale and both are 1:72 scale.

The first is a Admiral Toys 1:72nd Armor 72001, Panzer III L Tank Diecast Model, German Army, #5, North Africa for only $9.99.

The Admiral Toys "1:72nd Armor" range presents highly-detailed, ready-made diecast models of military vehicles. Admiral Toys diecast tanks require no gluing or painting. Each model is an instant display piece or diorama centerpiece straight from the box. Made from diecast metal and plastic components, the die cast tanks in the Admiral Toys series are 100% true to scale... these don't look like model tanks, they look like tanks!. Color, camouflage and unit markings are carefully researched for maximum authenticity, marking the difference between and authentic scale model tank and a "toy" tank.

  • Diecast metal and plastic construction.
  • Rotating turret, elevating cannon and accurate hull.
  • Painted, fitted, non-moving tracks on detailed non-rotating wheels.

Our second tank is a Dragon 1:72 Armor 60307, M4 Sherman Tank Diecast Model, British Army Coldstream Guards, Germany, 1945, Mk.V Tulip available for $12.99.

The Sherman M4A4 was produced by Detroit Arsenal and all vehicles had a three-piece bolted nose. It was powered by a Chrysler WC Multibank engine, which required the lengthening of the rear hull to accommodate it. Many M4A4 Shermans were delivered to the British, where it was referred to as the Sherman Mk.V. Dragon Armor proudly offers a Sherman Mk.V of the famous Coldstream Guards of the British Army. This is no ordinary Mk.V, for it possesses some fascinating appendages on the turret! The model is armed with twin launchers for 60lb aircraft rockets. This type of Sherman V was modified in the field by the Coldstream Guards Armoured Division in late 1944. The rockets were taken from Typhoon fighters, and rocket-equipped Shermans were used in combat during the Rhine crossings. They achieved success against targets like roadblocks and enemy personnel sheltering in buildings and woods, plus they also gave a huge morale boost to British troops! The rocket and launcher details on this new Dragon Armor model are subtle and accurate, as are all the details of this 1/72 scale Sherman Mk.V model of a vehicle of the 1st Armoured Battalion of this famous division fighting in Germany in 1945. The paint finish on this replica is exemplary, as it accurately captures the British bronze green color used at this period of the war.

In 1975, the 71st moved to its current home with the 1st Fighter Wing at Langley Air Force Base, Va., where it was equipped with the F-15 Eagle air superiority fighter in 1976.

The 71st garnered numerous awards in its distinguished career. The 71st Fighter Squadron won the prestigious Hughes Achievement Trophy in 1999, 1993 and 1969, awarded annually to the most outstanding air superiority unit in the Air Force. The 71st received the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award and the Presidential Unit Citation on four occasions each. McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Corporation recognized the 71st in July 1991, for achieving 110,000 flying hours without a serious mishap.

The 71st TFS deployed in support of Operation Desert Shield as part of the first U.S. Air Force contingent in Saudi Arabia. The squadron was integral in establishing allied air-superiority during the operation. More recently the squadron participated in Operation Southern Watch in the Persian Gulf Region. The unit was redesignated the 71st Fighter Squadron Sept. 1, 1991.
