Default For the week of March 13, 2011

Our Spring Break and SxSW picks start with the Tamiya Masterwork TA26546 1:48 scale British Universal Carrier Mk. II from Micro Macro Mundo for $45.39.

During World War II, British and Commonwealth armies used a vast number of small sized, fully tracked weapons carriers, chief among which was the Universal Carrier Mk.II. The compact, open top vehicle served in a variety of roles on the North African, Italian and West European fronts. A number of variants were constructed, including models mounted with mortars and flamethrowers however, most machines typically carried a Bren light machine gun. Over 65,000 models were manufactured in Britain, Canada and other Commonwealth countries, making it one of the most numerous armored vehicles built during WWII.

Specs & Features

This is a finished model of the British Universal Carrier Mk.II.
You are able to display your model as it is, once removed from its cube-shaped box.
Length: 80mm.
The model depicts a carrier from the 2nd Bttn., Kings Shropshire Light Infantry, 3rd Infantry Div. Europe.
One driver figure included.
The model comes with high quality pad printed markings and decals preapplied.
A light weathering is applied to enhance the realistic appearance of the model.

In the very similar 1:50 scale from Corgi by way of Asheville DieCast, we next feature the T34/85 Tank, North Korean 109th Tank Regiment for $31.17.

From the skies of World War I, we next feature the Corgi 1:48 scale Sopwith Camel B6299 – No. 10 Naval Sqn, RNAS, Flt Lt N M MacGregor, Teteghem, Late 1917 from Crossroads Diecast for $29.99.

10 Naval Sqn was formed in Feb 1917 and was initially equipped with Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutters. They then converted to Sopwith Triplanes and by the time the Camels arrived later in 1917, Naval 10’s famous Triplane ‘Black Flight’ had already scored around 50 victories and were gaining a fearsome reputation within the German Air Service. Norman Miers MacGregor was one of 29 Aces to fly with ‘Naval 10’. He moved to the Sqn as a flight commander from 6 Naval Sqn late in 1917. He finished the war with 7 (possibly 8) kills to his name with the last two being gained in Camel B6299. As a ‘B’ Flight aircraft it was identified by the large white ‘B’ on the fuselage sides and the distinctive red and white striping around the cowling area and the rear decking behind the cockpit.

From the Flying Mule is the Dragon 1:72 scale Warbirds 50123
Supermarine Spitfire Mk V Diecast Model--RAF No.249 Sqn. for $15.99.

An excellent release, this mighty Spitfire showcases one of the aircraft that brilliantly led the defense of Malta in 1942.
British submarines and planes operating from the island fortress of Malta had sent thousands of tons of Axis ships to the bottom of the Mediterranean. Axis air forces were employed to neutralize the island's defenses to make way for an invasion under the code name Operation HERKULES. The Axis aerial attacks reached severe levels after 21 March 1942. Outnumbered and short of supplies, the island's British defenders clung on, with a series of deliveries of new Spitfires coming at critical times. In the end it was the Spitfires who saved the day and turned the tide, with the German offensive faltering after mid-May. In total, 500 Axis planes were destroyed or severely damaged, most of these accounted for by the remarkable Spitfire.
The Supermarine Spitfire was a single seat fighter used by the RAF and many Allied countries in World War II. It saw service during the whole of World War II, in all theaters of war, and in many different variants. More than 20,300 of all variants were built, and Spitfires remained in service well into the 1950's. In total there were 24 marks of Spitfire and many sub-variants within each mark. Late in 1940 the Mk. II started meeting a new German aircraft in combat. Essentially a cleaned up version of the Bf 109E that Spitfires and Hurricanes had bested the year before in the Battle of Britain, the new Franz (Friedrich) model was superior to the Mk. II Spitfire in many respects. The Mk. V was nothing more than a Mk. II with the newer Merlin 45 series engine. This engine delivered slightly more takeoff power at 1,440 hp (1074 kW), but greatly increased the power available at higher altitudes due to a new two-speed supercharger design. While it was no Mk. IV, the Mk. V was able to hold its own with the 109Fs it was meeting. The Mk. V proved so useful that it would go on to be the most produced version by far, with 94 Mk. VAs (eight-gun), 3,923 Mk. VBs (cannon) and 2,447 Mk.VCs.

Designed by R.J.Michell to meet a British Air Ministry specification, the Supermarine Spitfire first flown on March 5th, 1936. With its combination of beautiful fighter design, the excellent performance of its Rolls-Royce Merlin power plant and firepower provided by twin cannons and four machine guns, the Spitfire became an unrivaled symbol of victory. The Spitfire had 40 major variants and was built in greater numbers than any other British aircraft of the time. It flew operationally on every front between 1939 and 1945 and was engaged in every one of the Royal Air Force's major actions.

Our flying turncoat is a 1:72 scale Hobby Master Ju-87 D3 Sidi Haneish LG13, Nov. 1942 "Captured Stuka" from Crossroads Diecast for $21.99.

General Background

The Ju 87 was considered as one of the most important German military aircrafts during WWII. It was better known as the “Stuka” which means “Dive Bomber”.

While the Ju 87 achieved great success during the beginning of WWII due to its accuracy in bombing, it suffered from lack of speed and defense armament. Without the escort of German fighters the Stuka easily became preys for enemy high speed fighters. After the Battle of Britain the Ju 87 was seldom seen in actions in the continent.

In 1940, the Ju 87 D (the “Dora” series), with a more powerful engine Jumo 122F, was developed for the attack of heavily defended targets. In 1943, with the approaching invasion of Russia, the Ju87 G “Gustav” was developed for anti-tank purpose. It was fitted with two 37mm cannons under the main wing and the number 1 ace of it was the legendary Oberst (Colonel) Hans Ulrich Rudel who had achieved over 500 kills of Russian armor include one battle ship destruction.

The Aircraft

In late July 1942 eighteen Jeeps with SAS members began their initial attacks on LGs ( British term -Landing Grounds) landing strips. There were a string of these strips around Sidi Haneish 70 miles from El Alamein. During these attacks hundreds of German planes were destroyed but some were captured with little or no damage. The 601 Squadron became the owner of an Italian Air Force Stuka "D" from LG 13. The squadron added RAF markings as well as the squadron code "UF". The "Captured Stuka" had its bombs and machine guns removed and it was used from November 1942 to February 1943.

Coming on line too late to chase it is the Corgi 1:72 scale RAF BAC Lightning F6 74 Sqn Singapore 1969 from EZToys for $44.99.

Product Description

In 1967, XS921 and other Lightning’s of 74 Sqn made the long journey to Tengah Air Base in Singapore and in doing so became the first RAF fighter unit to make such a journey using air to air refueling.

The deployment to Singapore, codenamed ‘Operation Hydraulic’, gave the RAF’s Far East Air Force (FEAF) a powerful supersonic fighter element in the region. This was deemed necessary in order to deter the territorial claims made by Indonesia against nearby Malaysia, a British protectorate. The show of strength proved successful and 74 Sqn departed Tengah in August 1971 with the squadron disbanding.

Its Lightning’s were taken over by 56 Sqn at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus. In September 1985, while serving with 11 Sqn, Lightning XS921 was lost after developing technical problems while returning to RAF Binbrook after a training exercise but thankfully the pilot was able to make a successful ejection.

It took 300,000 man hours to produce just one Tiger I tank (approximately double that required for a Panther), but what a tank it was! Its two principal strengths were its main gun – an 8.8cm KwK 36 L/56 – and its armor of rolled homogeneous nickel-steel plate. Responding to popular demand, Dragon Armor has announced another spectacular fully built-up Tiger I tank in 1/35 scale. This new arrival is a Late Production variant, meaning it has characteristic features like steel road wheels and a monocular sight in the mantlet to the right of the gun barrel. This amazing model shows tank number 213 of Pz.Abt.301.

This tank unit supported Heeres Gruppe B in the Ardennes offensive in late 1944, where it paid a heavy toll in vehicles destroyed. Numerous Tigers were lost in the fighting in late December through to early January, before the remainder withdrew to refit in the Köln area of Germany. The unit remained on the Western Front until the war ended. This large-scale model from Dragon Armor sports a distinctive “stripy” three-color camouflage scheme. It has also received a light layer of weathering - this is especially obvious in places like the spare track links hung on the turret sides, as well as the metallic-looking track runs. This scale model is made to the highest standards of accuracy and craftsmanship, completely ready to defend its territory as Allied units threaten the Fatherland.

The Tiger hunt begins at the middle left of this page:

http://www.j-p-hobbies.com/products.asp?cat=236

Our first Easter flight is from the Dragon Wings 1:72 scale P-51D™ Mustang USAAF 8 AF, 361st FG BL from The Toy Federation for $17.95.

It's already May! Our first selection of the month is a Dragon 1:35 scale railroad gun. It's the Super Heavy Self-Propelled Mortar 54cm Mörser "Thor" (Firing Mode) from Toy Train Heaven for just $46.79. You have to call or email by COB on the 3rd for this special price, which they list as:
2083-61013 SUPER HEAVY SP MORTAR 54cm :35 MSRP $107.97 Sale $46.79 57% Off

Features:
- Fully assembled
- True to 1/35 scale
- Fully accurate mold
- Open window display packaging
- Highly popular and collectible item
- Includes protective display case

One of the most impressive artillery pieces ever produced must surely be the Gerät 040 series of self-propelled heavy siege mortars fielded by Germany in WWII. Weighing in at approximately 124 tons and with a length of 11.137m, these six massive war machines featured a 60cm barrel that could hurl a 2-ton shell a distance of 6.8km. To increase the weapon’s extremely short range, a 54cm gun barrel was subsequently manufactured and fitted to three of the Mörser vehicles. Now designated Gerät 041, the longer 7.1m barrel of the weapon increased the range to 10.4km.

One of these 54cm siege mortars has been meticulously recreated in miniature by Dragon Armor. The 1/35 scale vehicle depicted in this release is named “Thor”, which was the fourth vehicle to be produced. Serving with the 2nd Batterie of the 833rd schwere Artillerie Abteilung on the Eastern Front, “Thor” was eventually captured by the Soviets near the war’s end. Fully assembled and pre-painted, “Thor” constitutes an impressive model thanks to its sheer size and bulk. This Dragon Armor item is full of intricate detail, and it is presented in firing mode with the chassis lowered. The three-color camouflage scheme is particularly well done, lending the model a commanding presence. As a special bonus, a huge shell is included. This “god of thunder” bespeaks massive destructive power, and it’s ready for immediate display on any shelf big enough to take it!

About the T-34:
The ancestry of the T-34 derives from the BT series of fast tanks developed in the USSR in the 1930's. These were discovered to be too lightly armoured and armed for the sort of combat that would be expected. The T-34 took the BT's Christie-type suspension and incorporated it into a much more robust tank (The BTs were derived from prototype fast tanks built by American tank designer J. Walter Christie, which were sold to the Soviet Union after the American military declined to buy them. The T-34 incorporates elements of the Christie suspension, in particular the large road wheels).

Development proper commenced in 1936, and a prototype was completed in 1939. Full scale production started in 1940. The T-34 was produced in two major variants, the basic T-34/76 with a 76-mm gun (simply called T-34, in Soviet service), and the T-34/85 with an 85-mm gun.

Between 1940 and 1944 nearly 40,000 T-34/76 tanks were produced.

Default For the Week of May 8, 2011

We make our selections this week in continued celebration of the world being rid of a terrorist murderer, who is currently roasting marshmallows with Adolph, Joe and Mao.

Our armor selections this week are both from the Dragon 1:72 scale line. The first of these is the 60124 Ferdinand, 1.Kompanie, sPzJgAbt.653, Orel Eastern Front, July 1943 w/Zimmerit from On Mark for just $9.00.

Features:
- new-tooled upper super structure and lower hull
- true-scale model
- Historically accurate camouflage
- Detailed and weathered track links
- Dragons patented Zimmerit coating
- display case

The Ferdinand was a heavy assault tank designed by Porsche and built by Nibelungenwerke, especially for the needs of the Eastern Front. Ferdinand's design was based on Porsche's Tiger - VK 4501(P) prototype which proved to be prone to mechanical failures and was rejected in favour of Henschel's prototype.

Next we go to the Dragon 1:72 scale Jagdtiger Porsche Version w/ Zimmerit, sPzJgAbt 653, Alsace 1945 (60264) from Burbank's House of Hobbies for $11.47.

Special Features:
- Open window display packaging
- Highly popular and collectible item
- True to 1/72 scale
- Fully accurate mold
- Fully assembled
- Historically accurate markings and insignia
- Includes protective display case

About This Release,
It weighed more than 70 tons...It was the heaviest armored vehicle to enter combat in WWII…It boasted a powerful 128mm PaK44 L/55 gun…It was none other than the formidable Jagdtiger! Dragon now brings to collectors, a spectacular 1/72 scale model of this mighty German tank destroyer. The model is distinguished by the fact that it features the rare Porsche suspension system. Of the 88 Jagdtigers built, just 11 of the earliest vehicles were based on the Porsche suspension design, which had eight road wheels instead of the nine wheels on the later Henschel-designed setup.

This model represents a vehicle fighting against the advancing Allies in Alsace on the Western Front in 1945. It is from sPzJgAbt 653, one of only two heavy antitank battalions equipped with the Jagdtiger (the other was sPzJgAbt 512). Interestingly, only about 20% of Jagdtigers were lost as a result of combat damage, for the majority were abandoned and sabotaged by their crews usually when they broke down! Another interesting aspect of this model from Dragon Armor is the zimmerit coating, which adorns the hull and almost to the top of the superstructure sides. This is produced by Dragon’s high-tech patented zimmerit process. The top of the boxy fighting compartment is also draped in a tarpaulin, which provided some form of additional weather protection for the crew. The accurate scale model is coated in a precise three-coat camouflage scheme. It’s also authentically weathered, which enhances the scale look of the zimmerit. All in all, this is a fine rendition of the mightiest armored vehicle to fire in anger during the world’s largest ever conflict.

We have found a 2004 released Matchbox 1:72 scale (H3739) North American P-51D Mustang, "Shangri-La", Maj. Dominic Gentile, War Bond Tour, USAAF from Fidelis Models for just $16.75.

Last to lift off this week is a great pair of 1:48 scale Eagles International P-51B's from the Flying Mule for only $39.99 without a coupon code and an amazing $35.99 with it. You can pick up the Eagles International 10007 North American P-51B Mustang Diecast Model RAF No.315 (Polish) Sqn, Eugeniusz Horbaczewski, RAF Brenzett, England, June 1944.

Designed to meet an RAF requirement for fighter-bomber and reconnaissance aircraft, the P-51 Mustang was first flown on October 26th, 1940. This versatile aircraft was capable of escorting bombers on long-range missions, engaging in dogfights, and dropping down to destroy German targets on the ground. At least eight versions of the P-51 were produced, but it was the definitive P-51D that gave the Mustang its classic warbird appearance. Britain and the US both tested the airframe with the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, which gave the aircraft tremendous performance gains. The Truman Senate War Investigating Committee called the Mustang "the most aerodynamically perfect pursuit plane in existence."

The Eagles International range presents highly-detailed, ready-made diecast models of military aircraft.

Eagles International diecast airplanes feature:
  • Diecast metal construction with some plastic components.
  • Realistic panel lines, antennas, access panels and surface details.
  • Pad printed markings and placards that won't fade or peel like decals.
  • Optional extended/retracted metal landing gear with rotating wheels and rubber tires.
  • Detailed removable pilot figures.
  • Detailed cockpit interiors with open/closed canopy options.
  • Authentic detachable ordnance loads complete with placards.
  • Accurately detailed underside with concealed screwheads.
  • Presentation stand to display the aircraft "in flight".
  • Length: 8" & 9.25" Width
and/or

The Eagles International 10004 North American P-51B Mustang Diecast Model USAAF 26th FS, 51st FG, Tex Hill, China, 1945.

David Lee 'Tex' Hill was a pre-war Navy Pilot, recruited in 1941 by General Claire Chennault to join the AVG, better known as the 'Flying Tigers'. The 51st Pursuit Group later became the 51st Fighter Group seeing action in the India-Burma Campaign. Assigned to the 14th Air Force in October 1943 they moved to China where they received P51s in 1945.
The plane that made the Mustang famous! The P-51B (Inglewood, CA Manf.) and the P-51C (Dallas, TX Manf.) was a major progression to the original Allison powered P-51A Mustang. The British designation for the B/C Mustang was Mustang III. While the P-51A was a fine low altitude fighter, it suffered from the lack of a two speed, two stage supercharger for its Allison engine. Most aerial combat in Europe took place above 15,000 feet, right where the P-51A was running out of steam. The Allison was early into its development and wouldn't display its full power until the P-82 twin Mustang, too late for the war. The P-51B/C would mate the Spitfire's well developed Merlin engine (racing since 1935), licensed for manufacture in the US by Packard, to its sleek airframe. A four bladed propeller and the new supercharger turned the P-51 into one of, if not the best fighters of WWII.The P-51B/C was actually faster than the P-51D due to combat weight increases. 3,378 B's and C's were built by North American Aviation (Later Rockwell International and today Boeing).

Default For the Week of May 15, 2011

Both of our armor selections this week are in the 1:72 scale, but that is where almost all the similarities between them ends. First up for those on a $4 a gallon gasoline budget, we feature the Dragon (DRR60044) Challenger II w/ Upgrade Armor--Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, Iraq 2003 from Great Models for $9.95.

The superb Challenger 2 (CR2) is the British Army’s Main Battle Tank. The CR2 is based on the Challenger 1 that served with distinction on operations in the Gulf War and the Balkans. Only 5 per cent of Challenger 2 components are interchangeable with its predecessor; over 150 major modifications include a completely new turret, L30 CHARM 120mm gun and second generation Chobham armour.

The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards were instrumental in capturing Basra in April of 2003.

This highly detailed model features intricate camouflage markings and includes a sturdy display case!

Take this high road with the low toll:

Our next pick is from a newish entry to the market--Panzerstahl. We feature the Flakpanzer IV Ostwind - Prototype Sept.1944 from Burbank's House of Hobbies for $16.50.

About the model:
* true to scale diecast model made from metal, smaller parts made from plastic
* fully assembled
* rotating wheels with flexible track (unique for 1/72 diecast models)
* rotating turret and elevatable gun
* historically accurate painted and marked
* including protective case for display
* package comes with open window display

About the original:
The Flakpanzer "Ostwind" had a 3.7cm FlaK43 in a six sided turret put onto a Panzer IV. The production series is based on Panzer IV Ausf.J hulls.
It was built by Deutsche Eisenwerke. From December 1944 until March 1945 only 43 Ostwind were produced and issued to AA platoons of Pz.Rgt, and Pz.Div.

The engine was the 265HP Maybach HL120TRM which allowed a maximum speed of 38km/h on street. The Ostwind was 5.92m long, 2.95m wide and 2.96m high. It weighted 25 tons.

The Prototype was built at Ostbau-Sagan using a 3.7cm FlaK37 in July 1944 and was sent for troop trials in September 1944.

Avoiding friendly AA fire, our next selection is the Corgi 1:32 scale Aviation Archive Collector Series AA34908. Messerschmitt Bf 109G Luftwaffe JG 50, "Red 1", Hermann Graf from Bad Cat for $99.00 if you miss the "MAYSALE10" coupon on the home page or $89.90 if you don't.

You can find it on this back fence:

Our last pick is another Corgi, but in the 1:72 scale. From Corgi sale at The Drop Zone, it is the Junkers Ju52, 2/KGzbV1 Milos Greece 1941 for $68.95.
