Default 2008 Die Cast Buys of the Year

It's New Year's Eve and an appropriate time to pick our second annual die cast buys of the year. While there may have been a few better selections among the over 200 recommendations we made in 2008, I'll end the year by giving the top picks of year, inspired by the selections made during the entire year and tempered by what is still available at year end.

We'll start with aircraft and a selection from the very first week of the this year. One of Corgi's best is the 1:72 scale Catalina, and the best of all the liveries of this bird is the hard to get (especially at a reasonable price) "Black Cat". Motormint still has it at $69.98.

Put on your water-wings and paddle here:

http://www.motormint.com/index.asp?P...OD&ProdID=1485

Our 1970's aircraft buffs will like the 1:72 Corgi F-4D PHANTOM, 1/72 SCALE, USAF, RAF WOODBRIDGE CORGI AVIATION ARCHIVE SERIES Model: AA33218 from Skidmarks for $31.96.

The air version of That 70's Show is here:

Our next selection is a hard to get and excellent 1:48 scale Eagles International P-51B, DON GENTILE'S "SHANGRI-LA" for $59.95 at Perry's.

Aim your four .50 cals here:

Moving out to sea and returning to the Viet Nam era, our fourth selection is a 1:72 scale Century Wings A-7E Corsair II U.S. Navy VA-86 Sidewinders AJ400 1978, brought to you by Joe Pilot for $45.33. Shipping is currently free to the lower 48.

Pick five is an outstanding deal on a 1:32 scale Corgi working range P-51D. You can pick it up for a very low $49.95 at either Historic Aviation or Military Issue. Not only does this limited edition, 1/32 scale die cast model of 13½-victory ace Donald Strait's P-51D Mustang "Jersey Jerk" include top-of-the-line features such as a removable engine cowl, a detailed cockpit with a sliding canopy, and movable flight control surfaces, it also includes powered features such as illuminated navigation lights, a fully operational undercarriage, and a spinning propeller with real engine sounds! You control the action through the specially designed base, so strap on your flight helmet and get ready for takeoff! 14¼" wingspan; arrives ready to display.

Your choice of vendor--either Military Issue:

or Historic Aviation:

Our final air pick of the year is a selection from just a few days ago. Squadron has a very good deal on a classic Corgi 1:72 scale heavy bomber. This one is a Consolidated B-24J Liberator- "Michigan". Series Aviation: Nose Art. Fully assembled and painted die-cast metal model. Includes removable landing gear, rubber tires, and display stand. The art refers to The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan and is the U.S. product development managers alma mater, M Go Blue! This BB (before Beau) classic can bomb Columbus for you if you have the $47.52.

Here's your ticket to Ann Arbor:

Our Ground Pounders will have to go to post #2 on this thread due to limitations on the number of pictures that I can include in a single post.

Default 2008 Die Cast Buys of the Year--AFV's

After using the last hour of daylight to take the dog for her last walk of the year, it's time to feature the AFV's. After posting all the planes, I realized that all were U.S. warbirds, so it's time to include something different in this mix.

The first is the heavy weight Minichamps entry of the LEOPARD 2A4GR XXI(ARMOURED BRIGADE XX, ARMOURED DIVISION - THESSALONIKI, GREECE) from Diecast Direct for $79.95.

Direct your Spartans here:

Next up is one of Dragon's 1:35 scale takes on the legendary Henschel version of the King Tiger. It is a fully assembled and painted, a professionally finished, WWII German heavy tank plastic display model. Features Zimmerit texture, adjustable gun elevation, rotating turret, opening cupola hatch (revealing finished gun breech), sand with brown camouflage and markings for 3+13, 3./s.Pz.Abt.506, Western Front, 1945. Includes plastic display base. Squadron has it for you for just $39.99.

Also featured in October was a Tamiya Masterwork T-55A Desert Version in 1/35 scale. Replicating a Polish-built T-55A employed by Iraqi forces in the First Gulf War, this professionally assembled and hand painted 1/35 scale plastic and metal model features textured surfaces, an aluminum gun barrel, an opening commander's hatch, a separately applied anti-aircraft heavy machine gun and a loader's hatch, rear-mounted fuel tanks, realistic metal tracks, a desert paint scheme, and more. 7¼" long; arrives ready to display. Military Issue has it for $69.95.

Find it in this sand pile:

During Thanksgiving week we featured a great buy from the the Corgi 1:50 skirmish line. It is a Panther Ausf.G Tank 1/50 Die Cast Model Ardennes offered by by Military Issue for just $19.95.

Recreating a scene from the Battle of the Bulge in December, 1944, this limited edition, 1/50 scale die cast Panther tank set by Corgi features a rotating turret and working tracks; add-on detail parts; a weathered, snow-covered appearance; and three figures of the German infantrymen that accompanied the armored units in the Ardennes. 5" long.

Put your head down and peer out of you snow dusted foxhole here:

The "biggest" deal of the 2008 is the 1:16 scale Unimax Forces of Valor 85007, M4 Sherman Tank Diecast Model--US Army, Normandy, France, D-Day June 6th 1944. The Flying Mule has it for $292.49, with the Flying Mule coupon that has just been extended through January 8, 2009, and with free shipping.

Length: 14.25" Width: 6.75"

The U.S. M4 Sherman was the most produced battle tank in WWII. Many variants were designed and manufactured to increase their effectiveness against German Panzer divisions. The M4A1 was quick, highly maneuverable, simple to maintain and was equipped with a 76 MM gun. This large-scale model of the Sherman is bristling with features that make it highly collectible. The model itself is a real heavy-weight and includes details impossible to achieve in a smaller scale. The model also includes detailed figures of crew members. Arrives in an large, attractive package complete with history book and limited edition certificate.

The Unimax "Forces of Valor" range presents affordable, ready-made diecast models of military vehicles.

Unimax "Forces of Valor" diecast vehicles feature:
  • Diecast metal construction with some plastic components.
  • Rotating turret, elevating cannon and accurate hull.
  • Painted, fitted, non-moving tracks on detailed non-rotating wheels.
  • Realistic panel lines, antennas, access panels and surface details.
  • Pad printed markings and placards that won't fade or peel like decals.
After you've found a place to hide it from the wife/girlfriend, click here:

Also on the large side is our final pick for 2008 and an item we featured in our last weekly picks for 2008. It is is a very good deal from Squadron on a large 1:24 scale Franklin Mint tank. It's a M4A3 Sherman 'Easy 8'. Korean War era US Army medium tank die cast model finished with fierce tiger paint scheme of the 3rd Infantry Division, 64th Tank Battalion, Korea, March 1951. The tab is $93.99.

Remove the turret and check out the engine, after ordering it here:
