Default 2010 Die Cast Buys of the Year

Just a couple of hours into 2011, it is an appropriate time to pick our fourth annual die cast buys of the year--this ones for 2010. While there may have been a few better selections among the over 250 recommendations from over 75 vendors we made in 2010, I'll end the year by giving the top picks of year, inspired by the selections made during the entire year and tempered by what is still available at year end.

We'll start with the AFV's.

Back on January 17th we featured the Dragon 1:35 scale Tiger I Initial Production, featuring winter camo and side mounted storage bin on the turret. Great Models had it for only $36.70--and they still do.

On March 28th we featured a triple threat of 1:35 scale Tamiya Masterwork German World War II era AFV's that were on sale at Military Issue. All three are back for an encore, starting with the Sturmgeschutz III Ausf. G. The price then was $79.95. Now it's a buck cheaper at $78.95.

Hand assembled and painted by expert modelers, this fully assembled, 1/35 scale, plastic and metal model of a World War II Sturmgeschütz III Ausf.G features an aluminum gun barrel with a muzzle brake, optional-position hatches, photo-etched engine grilles, a machine gun shield, removable side skirts, realistic metal tracks, plenty of tools and equipment, an authentic camouflage scheme with 237th Sturmgeschütz Brigade markings, and more. Measures approximately 7¾" long and arrives ready to display.

Being covered by over-watch is the Panzer IV Ausf. H. Both then and now the price is $78.95.

Replicating the most common German tank of World War II, this professionally assembled and hand painted, 1/35 scale, plastic and metal model features textured surfaces, an opening commander's hatch, an aluminum 7.5cm KwK 40 gun barrel, an anti-aircraft machine gun, turret and side armor, detailed metal tracks, authentic 2nd Panzer Division markings, and more. Measures 7¾" long and arrives ready to display.

The big boy of this trio is the Panther Ausf. G Late Version, with a slightly bigger (but likewise unchanged) price of $84.95.

Replicating the most widely produced and final variant of the deadly Panther, this professionally assembled and hand painted, 1/35 scale, plastic and metal model features textured surfaces, an aluminum gun barrel with a detailed muzzle brake, an anti-aircraft machine gun, side armor, photo-etched engine grille parts, realistic metal tracks, authentic 116th Panzer Division markings, and more. 9¾" long; arrives ready to display.

Our last feature AFV is also a 1:35 scale Tamiya Masterwork entry. However this one is modern and can be ordered from Tamiya. The JGSDF Type 90 Tank was priced at $90.00 on April 4th, but now it has been reduced to $75.00.

One of the most powerful modern day tanks, the Japan Ground Self Defense Force (JGSDF) Type 90 makes its way to the Masterwork Collection. Joining the M1A2 Abrams and Leopard 2 A6, the Type 90 is an indispensable addition to any modern tank collection.

About the JGSDF Type 90:

The third main tank for the JGSDF, the Type 90 entered service in August 1990. Packed with the latest hi-tech equipment, including 120mm smoothbore main gun, laser range finder, gun stabilizer, infrared night viewer, automatic cannon loading system and 7.62mm coaxial machine gun, the Type 90 is considered one of the most highly sophisticated modern day tanks in the world. Powered by a Mitsubishi V10 cylinder 1,500hp diesel engine and weighing in at just 50 tons, the Type 90 has a good power-to-weight ratio, reaching a top speed of 70km/h. A sophisticated hydraulic suspension system also ensures excellent maneuverability no matter the terrain.

  • Movable parts include wind sensor, commanders hatch and gunners hatch.
