Default Favorite Bands/Musicians Of All Time

Who are your favorite 3 bands/musicians of all time and why are they your top 3?

One of the things im most passionate about besides history is music and im sure most of you feel the same.

This should be a fun and interesting thread.

Ill kick this conversation off with my top 3.

#3. Deep Purple. Ritchie Blackmoore and the boys sure did know how lay down a classic jam or two. Ian Gillian's voice is a wonder in and of itself. Man he could scream like no one else. While most people love their classic stuff like "Smoke on the Water" & "Space Truckin", just to name a few, I personally like their later stuff better. Anything of their 2nd greatest hits album will get you in the mind of what im talking about.

#2. Iron Maiden. Historys best friend in music! Bruce Dickinson & Steve Harris have teamed up write some of the best WWII and history related music ever written. Not to mention the warning factor in lot of their other music about living your life right and what will happen to you if you dont. And hey, even if you arent into the meanings of the lyrics, they still get you with ass kicking metal riffs and killer gitaur solos.

#1. AC DC. My all time favorite band hands down. No other even comes close. First of all, i have never heard one of their songs that i didnt like. Ive never been able to say that about any other band. Secondly, what other band could survive the death of their lead singer, turn around and audition a new one, record a new album, release it in less than a year, and have it become one of rocks best selling albums ever? Not many, if any, i say. Angus & Malcom Young's blues based gitaur riffs and solos are symphonies to my ears, and used to be to my feet, back in the days when i could still dance, lol. Their music is based on a simple premise that anyone can connect with, getting laid & getting screwed up. A theme that is always popular with all generations! AC DC is still hugely popular and still sells millions of CD's worldwide and is rumored to have another album in the works. This is one fan that hopes it isnt a rumor and its very true.

I have a difficult time assigning slots to my favorite musicians/bands as I like many for different reasons.

Black Sabbath - Wonderfully original music for its time, oft imitated never duplicated. Think Wheels of Confusion/The Straightener and Megalomania.

Chanticleer - This 12 man acapella group sings some of the worlds best music ever written; from 9th century plainsong to modern day folk and blues.

There are only two rock groups that have stood the test of time in the modern era (1980 - present) delivering consistenly superior music driven by an intensely creative lyrical content and absolutely incredible musicianship. Those two groups are Rush and Tool. Having seen both in concert I can tell you that both pout on great shows but most importantly, both sound as though they are in the studio while on stage. No slop, no laziness, no mistakes. Clear concise and intelligible vocals and astounding guitar and drum work. Both drummers are in a class all their own. Neil Pert... the name says it all. Danny Carey, never have I seen someone do so much and make it look so effortless than this guy, except maybe one of those mindless drum machine programmers that come a dime a dozen on the techno/trance circuits.

Sorry, Kent--I have to give you eight because they are all so close. Since I'm the old guy and have heard rock almost from its beginning, I will indulge myself in this liberty. With one exception, these are all from the true classic rock period--starting with the 1964 British invasion and going forward about ten more years.

8. Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble: At just more than two years younger than I am (if he had lived), he is the baby of my group. Blues and rock melded into an indestructible alloy that also has plenty of soul. Master of the Stratocaster, he is one of the best (and certainly the loudest) white blues axemen. Tommy Shannon and Chris Layton are also excellent.

7. Aretha Franklin: Called the Queen of Soul; she is; enough said.

6. The Byrds: The originators of Folk-Rock; Country-Rock and Space-Rock. Lead throughout it existence by Roger (originally Jim) McQuinn, this great band has contained the talents of David Crosby, Chris Hillman, Gram Parsons, Gene Parsons and Clarence White. These guys were pioneers and did outstanding work in all the areas of music they opened up.

5. The Beach Boys: The first big group to write their own songs and take charge of them in the studio, they were ground-breakers in both music and the making of music. Led by deaf in one ear genius Brian Wilson, when he wasn't frying his brain on drugs or playing in his in door sand box, they made music the Beatles admired. Give a listen to the "Today" and "Pet Sounds" albums.

4. The Rolling Stones: Appearing in Austin this weekend, these AARP-men are still rocking after almost 45 years in the "bidness". Their best work was in the 1960's and 1970's. Simply, they are the second best pure rock and roll band in history. They also do a great job with the blues.

3. The Who: With Keith Moon as their drummer, they are the best pure rock and roll band that has ever been on this plant. "Tommy" and the rest of their catalog is great. But all you need to do is listen to 1971's "Who's Next". Released in the late summer, it was the album on college campuses during the 1971-1972 academic year.

2. The Allman Brothers Band: Originators of Southern Rock and the twin leads of Duane Allman and Dickie Betts. The Brothers made soulful, powerful and real music. No one can touch them in what they do.

1. The Beatles: Duh??! Without doubt the best of the best. They made great music throughout their career. They were musical evolution of steroids. Not only were they first, but they were also best at every stop along the way. No one touches them--period.

Good point Andy--we'll put him at #9, just ahead of Roy Orbison, the Dead, the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry. He "falls" to the bottom of the top ten due to the fat Elvis period and because he did not write his own songs.

EDIT: The Band also has to be added somewhere to this next tier of fantastic artists!

If you minus the "Fat Elvis" period, you still don't think he should be lower?

I myself never really understood all the hoopla over the Beatles myself... sure they had some good songs but like Led Zepplin who had some good songs on every album but they also had some that were "where in the hell are they coming from" as well...

As far as influence on American youth I would put Elvis Number one over the Beatles anyday after all if it wasn't for Elvis capturing the hearts and minds as well as pushing the envelope so to speak the Beatles would have been nothing... Don't get me wrong, I am not a huge Fan of Elvis, I like "Some" of his songs but thats about it. Elvis paved the way (regardless of how you feel about him).

I never understood the "Beatles" thing. They always struck me as either juvenile "pop-rock / bubblegum" rock or politically charged leftisit dope heads. They are, at best, annoying. As Crim serenades Soldier ".. I wanna hold your, eh..., hand..."

Blech.

Rob, you are obviously not familiar with the slock that was on the radio, after the plane with Buddy Holly and others went down in Iowa in 1959, through 1963.

I suggest that you listen to "Sgt. Pepper" and "Abbey Road", remembering the state of popular music at the times the Beatles released all their material. I bet that few if any of the groups that you like would be around, at least in their musical form that you know, had there been no Beatles.

You guys would understand the Beatles if you had "been there". I will add that 1964-1971 was the greatest time to have experienced rock as part of growing up.
