Overview (not yet a review) of the game by Jim Cobb:

http://www.wargamer.com/article/2982/war-in-the-east

"Some gamers will find the campaigns of War in the East overwhelming. Hopefully, the shorter scenarios will whet their appetites for the real meat. PBEM, internet play and new scenarios made using the editor guarantee replay value. The word “definitive” should not be used lightly but, at this point, this product is the definitive game for the Eastern Front. Serious gamers should save their money and get it.

Pros - Great detail, clean interface.

Cons - Steep learning curve."

I broke down and bought War in the East, so did sspoom.

Steep learning curve? Yes.

Having played War in Russia helps. After messing with it for a couple of hours, it started coming back to me. HUGE game. Huge.

I never took Moscow in '41 in War in Russia (Starfury's the only person I ever heard claim he did), and I doubt I'll be able to in War in the East, but I'll be ready to start the '41 Campaign in a week or two.

I've been playing a couple of months now, even lead the ladder at the Blitz, though that is more luck then anything else. Really like this game and I am still working out all the nuances so I'm sure it will be even better in the future.

Did you guys get the digital download or did you get the boxed edition? Its probably silly, but I like the idea of installing from a CD. If you got the boxed edition, is the manual helpful? I read that it is only a portion of the full manual.

Also, can this game be easiliy loaded on two (or three) computers concurrently? I am thinking my home pc, work pc (over lunch, of course) and my laptop (for times when kids are using home pc).

You can download it to two, at least. I have it at home and at work (over lunch, of course).

I got the digital download. Steve bought the boxed edition, so he can tell you about the manual.

I played War in Russia for hundreds and hundreds of hours, and even though the interface is completely different, I just jumped right in and started playing and picked it up (or am picking it up) pretty quickly.

Can the Germans actually win the War vs. Russia or even get a draw (which = what in this game?).

Or is this a game where outside events (the Western Allies / nukes) = a German defeat in the game in '45 no matter what?

Unless this game is different than every other Matrix title, there is no limit on installs. All you need is a valid serial number for each install.

I did the digital install. I think the manual that comes with the boxed edition is only a partial manual. I actually like the e-book version of the manual because it makes it pretty easy to search for something. I think with the current patch that between equal opponents it's going to be difficult for the Germans to win but they can certainly make it go all the way. to the end.

i think i'm going to splurge and get the boxed edition. That way, i'll have a location where I can keep a copy of the serial number for future use. Plus, this gives me something to read on the can.
