Default Gaming with Vista

Trying to play games made for prior MS operating systems in Vista continues to be a problem for many. Perhaps things will improve with future service packs and/or patches, but we know that there are problems for many who want to play the CM series on Vista powered machines. Further, flight simmers are having similar problems. By way of example, this is a post at the Sim-Outhouse:

" to bad
there have been countless posts and problems with vista and the gaming community has taken a severe hit with more than just flight sims involved.
i would seriously consider installing xp onto any vista machine if you have gaming in mind.
do yourself a favour and go back and purchase il-2 1946 as it is the ultimate ww-2 flight sim with all the bells and whistles of all of the il-2 series expansions combined. then patch to the most recent patch.
i would ask the seller if they would put xp on it for you although it's better to ask that prior to the purchase

keeping vista and gaming will cause you more frustration than its worth.i know of cases where they struggled for co unless hrs. to get a sim to work and after finally flying it excitedly went to join up online and no joy it would not let him connect.
for what its worth IMHO get rid of vista and install xp for trouble free gaming.

PD"

So for those of you in the know--how deep are the problems and what are the issues that have cause them? What is the outlook for any significant improvement?

WinXP is still available from NewEgg. With the delay of the 1st SP for Vista delayed at least until next year... maybe you Vista users ought to consider buying a copy.

You know... I ran ME for a few years after XP came out and did just fine. I don't plan on running Vista for at least two more years.

I cannot play just a handfull of games and thats something I can live with temporarily, For what I get with using Vista I can accept it.

Vista isn't as bad as most make it out to be.... you have to put everything into perspective.....like what games your talking about....

I have no sympathy for people crying about CMBO & CMBB....like A LOT of games, these are games that are OLD..... what does one expect when a COMPLETELY brand new operating system comes out??? Like everything else, those OLD games will die off into extinction (except for those like Marky who will never upgrade until his machine dies of old age) It's the nature of the beast.... how many people couldn't play their old games when XP came out..... People who were playing games that were made for the Windows 95 couldn't play them anymore....

People have to realize, games have life cycles and until they learn that they can bang their heads against the wall all they want...... Personally, move on and accept advancing technology......Hell, embrace it!

I personally am liking VISTA more and more, I will like it a whole lot better once the first Sp comes out and then again, I will of course have to look forward to newer problems once it is released..... a la "The nature of the beast"

Well thanks for your lack of sympathy for the past time of a great many people who play those games. Very refreshing... and inspiring. All my win 95 games work on my XP rig with the exception of one that is actually a rip of an Original PlayStation console game played through an emulator. I just can't slow my pc down enough to make it playable. But then again... that's a hardware issue, not an OS issue.

So exactly which games are you playing on Vista that you wouldn't be able to on XP, Andy?

I agree with Rob. Very few of the games I was playing on Windows 98 could not be played on XP. Vista, which appears to offer far less of a quantum jump in important features to most users than did XP, seems to be leaving a much larger segment of games and other software unusable. That my friend is a problem, and one that I am not yet ready to embrace.

Lets be fair.... XP offered a "Compatibility Software" feature but let's be real, it wasn't fool-proof by any means. It allowed you to play "some" games but NOT all games that were made for the Win 95 platform or earlier.

The only problem is that people don't know when to let go..... software compatibility ( especially with regard to new O/S's ) cannot be guaranteed forever people regardless if you LOVE a specific title. In a Utopian world everything would be perfect but my friends we don't live in one.....

It only makes sense for games made in the Win98 era not to be able to work with the VISTA platform....as technology advances some sacrafices have to be made... ( a la old games ) but then again, who in this entire thread even has Vista running on their current machine?
If memory serves, I am the only one along with Frankie.... With the impending SP who knows what will happen... you whiny little bastards might get your way... ( wink, wink ;) ) ( the last comment was made in jest )
With the new SP you just never know....

The ONLY real problem I have with VISTA is the compatibility with my freakin Itunes.... I can wholeheartedly say it sucks! It's a problem because both Apple & Microsuck are pointing the finger at each other and for the time being are not doing a damn thing about the problem.

Well might as well put my .02$ in.
I just built a new computer and I put XP on
as the O.S. .Even though it wont handle the 4 gig of
ram I bought.
When I start to hear favorable things about
Vista I will upgrade and add the 2nd half of my memory.
