Default Theatre of War 2 Announced

Hopefully the debut of part 2 will be much less problematic than part 1 was at its release. Here's the press release:

Battlefront has announced Theatre of War 2 is headed to North Africa.

Today, Battlefront.com, independent internet publisher and developer of computer war and strategy games since 1997, and the leading Eastern and Central European publisher 1C Company, have announced Theatre of War 2, the sequel to one of the most historically accurate RTS games dedicated to World War II ever published.

Theatre of War 2 covers the events of 1943 during the operations in Tunisia. As with its predecessor, Theatre of War 2 is being created by one of 1C’s own internal development studios.

Together with the announcement of the title, a video trailer, screenshots and the official game webpage are revealed!

Recovering from their losses after the crushing defeat and subsequent retreat after the Second Battle of El-Alamein, the German Afrika Korps - reinforced and now supported by the Italian Army - prepare once more to put steel against steel with the Allies. The Axis forces, under the command of the legendary General Erwin Rommel, have an all too brief opportunity to seize victory from the clutches of their earlier failures.

Players will lead Rommel’s Afrika Korps in their last full-scale military campaign and command the English and American armies as they try to push the Axis forces out of Africa once and for all.

“In Theatre of War 2 we not only improved the graphics and the AI system, we added new units and features. We wanted to make a game that would exceed expectations of our fans,” said David Philippov, Head of internal Game Development at 1C. “After the original game was released we spent a lot of time reading comments and gathering opinions. I believe that Theatre of War 2 will become popular not only among old fans, but gain new followers. It is a real step forward for our team.”

“When 1C approached us with their plans for a sequel, we knew that - just like with the first title that was successfully released by Battlefront.com - it would be a perfect fit for Battlefront’s lineup of Superior War and Strategy Games”, said Martin van Balkom, President of Battlefront.com. “1C’s dedication and love for even small details was apparent in the first game already, and the sequel is even more ambitious. We’re thrilled to be part of the ride and bring this game to our fans worldwide, via download as well as to stores.”

The game presents more than 40 types of different vehicles, new types of units, improved graphics and sound, a new advanced visual system that considers observation angle and smoke screens, combat inside buildings and hand-to-hand fighting, a brand new interface, improved soldier AI, and an improved infantry damage system. Special attention is being devoted to multiplayer and user created missions.

Theatre of War 2: North Africa 1943 is scheduled to be completed near the end of this year, 2008!
