Transferring service branches is among the most difficult administrative gyrations known to man. No disrespect to the Army (snicker), I have already earned the Eagle, Globe and Anchor and find it difficult to wrap my head around the idea of giving up my title of Marine for soldier.
There is a clause in every serviceman's contract. Regardless of the term of active duty the member signs up for the service branch has his ass for a MINIMUM of 10 years. Its called Catagory C status aka. Inactive Reserve as opposed to Cat. A (active duty) or Cat. B (active reserve). If the military truly runs into a body crunch, believe me, they can get all the personnel they need.
My 10 years is past but I put my name on the list for voluntary reactivation at need in 2001. So far... no phone call.
I will address your "no Iraqi involvement" comment after work.
